O model trains have a history of being the train that was used for children. The toy model trains, which were powering around the Christmas tree, were usually made of this size scale. The size was perfect for small hands that have a tendency to drop things. This is because the O model trains could be made in a very durable fashion. The scale has come a long way since its origin as a toy. The scale persists today as a viable scale used in many different countries around the world. Whereas the scales around the world, which represented O scale, used to be different, they have for the most part been unified to represent one size.

The United States remains one country in which O model trains are still pretty popular. At a 1:48 ratio, the scale is not one of the smaller scales. It takes a pretty large space to be able to create a layout, which will be believable for a train to run through. This is why the people who do the most O scale modeling are those who are members of clubs, or have large homes. It is just not a practical train to be used by those who have a small home or apartment because the layout would take up all the room in the home.

In Britain, the O model trains are more popular to create stationary scenes. A lot of time will be spent on creating the most realistic looking landscape and buildings because there will be no distraction of the train in movement. It is fortunate the O scale model trains are made large enough to match the detail being used in the scenery. A more popular scale in Britain to run a train is the 00 scale. This is because the scale is smaller and so the layout can be made smaller and still looks good enough to capture the imagination.

The first company to produce the O model trains scale was a German company called Marklin. The problem the company as well as all other German model train companies ran into was World War One. Protective tariffs and bans on all German made goods made it impossible for the German companies to sell in the United States. This opened the door for America for such powerhouse names in model trains like Lionel to gain a stronghold. While there were competitors that sprung up in between the wars, World War Two pretty much sealed the fate of the smaller companies. This gave Lionel the advantage over any competitor trying to compete in the O model trains market.

Those who use O model trains are dedicated to as much detail as possible. Some scenes have been known to get so intense as to even include working napkin dispensers in the diner. The paints and weathering techniques are superior because of the ability of anyone to scrutinize the appearance of the details. Though the scale is suitable for anyone, it is usually only recommended for those with the most detail oriented nature.
